RTMNU B A English Semester 1- Between The Mosque and the Temple: Question Answer
Between the Mosque and the Temple by Boman Desai - B A Compulsory English Question Answer B A first Semester Year RTMNU (Nagpur) University 2022
Answer each of the following questions in about 100 words.
1) Who
is Banu and how did Banu dress like businesslike for the day?
Banu is a Parsi woman who is
the chairman of the ‘Sanitation Committee.’ She has to settle a dispute between the Hindu and Muslim communities about the placement of a rubbish bin.
Banu put on a plain cotton
blouse, a plain sari with a plain border, and plain black walking shoes with
plain brass bangles to look more like a business-like. She never wore bangles
and rings and tilas so she did not even think about it.
2) How
did Banu solve the conflict?
Banu reached the site of the dispute. She said that the solution was simple but they all had to be
reasonable. They had got to find the place exactly between the mosque and the
temple. Banu said that she would walk from the mosque to the temple and they
should count her steps. She wanted both a Hindu and a Muslim to walk with her
and count her footsteps. The dustbin
would be placed exactly at the center place.
She walks and the Hindu leader counts the steps aloud. The students join the count. There are 232 steps between the mosque and
the temple. Banu orders to place the
dustbin at the 116th step. The Hindu
leader feels happy. The Muslim leader
nods his head.
3) Which historical event did Banu remember on
her way to solving the dispute?
While walking on her way to the site
to solve the dispute Banu remembered Gandhi’s salt march during which Hindus
and Muslims of both genders and all castes and ages had united in a show of
solidarity against English. The students followed her as they walked and many
others also joined them. Thus Banu remembered Gandhi's salt march.
4) Describe
the character of Banu?
Banu is a Parsi woman who is the
chairman of the Sanitation Committee. Banu has a maid named Pemmy. As Banu is
getting older, she is relying on Pemmy not only for household work but for companionship
too. Banu is mature, wise, and a smart woman.
She has solved a complex conflict between two religious groups amicably. Banu is
a confident lady who handled the conflict alone even though she was warned that
it was a complicated issue and could result in bloodshed. Banu succeeded in
solving the dispute between two religious parties. The leaders of both parties accepted the decision of Banu. Banu believed that she succeeded because
she was a Parsi and not Hindu nor a Muslim. Thus we can say that Banu is
tactful and a wise woman.
5) Describe
the ‘parade’ that Banu led?
Banu comes out of her house and meets
two members of the committee. She decides
to walk to the site. The members walked with Banu. She says that the spot is
not far away. On the way, Banu meets a
few students. The students call her ‘Banubai.’ They ask where is she going. She remembers
the salt march of Gandhi. She calls the
students to come along with her. The
students are a mixture of Muslims and Hindus.
On the way, the students ask others to join them in their walk. When Banu reaches the spot there is a big
crowd behind her. Banu was looking more impressive and powerful with her huge
followers.
