Answer each of the following questions in about 100 words.

1.    Why does not Arun hand the thief over to the police? In what ways is Arun different from other employers?

Arun does not hand over the thief to the police because the thief has put the money back in its place. This shows that the thief has realized his mistake and wants to change his ways. The thief must have felt guilty about himself. Arun wants to give the thief one chance and therefore forgives him. Arun gives him chance to change his life. Arun is different from other employers. He knows about the theft, yet he does not want to tell the thief about it. He realizes his own mistake of not giving a regular salary to Deepak. Thus, he gives him a chance to improve his ways of living.

  2.    What was Arun’s job? What did he usually do with the money he earned?

Arun was a writer. He used to write articles for magazines. He was a spendthrift and used to spend money on his friends. He did not bother to save money for his future.

  3.    Give a brief character sketch of Arun highlighting the positive aspects of his life?

Arun was a young man of 20 years. He was a tall, lean and thin fellow. He was an easy-going, kind and simple man. He was a writer and wrote books as well as contributed to magazines. His income was not regular. He did not give any importance to materialism. He was an extravagant man, who would spend money lavishly on his friends.

He was sympathetic towards Hari Singh and did not throw him out of his house when he could not cook well. He trusted a stranger and gave him the keys. He gave the thief a chance to change his ways when he realized, he was robbed. He showed no anger or disappointment nor was handed over to the police. He forgave the thief and had a positive approach. He transformed the thief by showing love, empathy, and compassion.

4. What does the thief say about the reactions of different types of people when they were robbed? How did he think Arun would react when he discovered the theft?

The thief had robbed all kinds of people. According to him, the greedy men were scared of being robbed. The rich men showed anger. The poor men feared and accepted their fate after being robbed. He thought that Arun would show only a touch of sadness. He would not be sad for the loss of money, but for the loss of trust. Arun would feel sad.

  5. Does Arun realize he has been robbed? What does he do?

Arun realizes that he has been robbed because he found some of the notes still wet as if they were taken out in rain. Arun does not hand the thief to the police nor does he tell the thief about it. He forgives him and gives him one chance to mend his ways.

Arun gives a five rupees note to the thief and promises to give him more every month and encourages the thief by saying that he will teach him a little more than writing his name. He forgives the thief and motivates him to learn more.

  6.    Write a character sketch of Deepak, the thief?

Deepak was fifteen years old, but already an experienced and fairly successful thief. He used to change his name frequently so as to hoodwink his former employers and the police. He even cheated Arun when he went to buy the daily supply of groceries. However, he wished to get an education so that he could become a big and respected man, who would be able to achieve a lot.

He stole a large sum of money from Arun, but regretted it when he realized that in doing so, he had lost his only chance of getting an education. He was courageous enough to return the money, even though he knew that he might be caught in the process. However, his desire to change himself is so great that it motivates him and gives him the courage to return to Arun. Deepak transforms his life and changes his ways. He now wants to be an educated man.
